Has anyone had experience with elevating dish of dog food to minimize urping? Does it work?
Probably not. The current thinking and research suggests that the elevation of the bowl is what must be done to prevent bloating. See … people are still thinking about lifting food bowl, because that is what we have said for years, but now the latest research found the reverse is true! Latest! Purdue study: These four (4) factors associated with increased risk of bloat in large dogs race 1) raising the food dish more than doubled the risk of bloat 2) Speed of eating dogs evaluated by their owners as very eaters soon had a 38% increase in the risk of bloat 3) Age: The study revealed that the risk increased by 20% for each year of age. Owners should be more alert to early signs of bloat as their dogs grow up. 4) Family History: Having a first degree (parent, brother, sister or offspring), which had inflated the increased risk of a dog of 63%. Conclusions The research team of Purdue concluded that these are things that you can do to prevent bloat: The strongest recommendation to prevent GVD (bloat) should be of the race is not a dog a first degree relative who had indigestion. This imposes a special responsibility to inform the owner of the breeder should their weathering dog. 1) Do not lift the feeder 2) Reduce the speed of dog food. A report of the Future research team will provide data on dietary factors and how they may or may not be associated with bloat risk references: 1. http://www.vet.purdue.edu/epi/bloat.htm 2.Glickman LT, Glickman NW, Schellenberg DB, et al.
