Best food for dog with sensitive stomach?
Dog has problems regularly – episodes of vomiting up her food, losing weight, refusing food despite being hungry, etc. After $$ tests, two different vets don’t know what else to do except prednisone, which we’d rather not. Recently gave her some Castor & Pollus Natural Ultramix Lamb and Rice, which she actually ate – and seems to keep down. But this has happened with a few other brands – then the problems started again. Anyone have similar difficulties? Any recommendations re: food that might help?
Don’t know how to reply to the answers (any suggestions?) so will try this … Thank you all. We do provide boiled chicken and rice during the dog’s bouts, which helps. Will try the oils and pumpkin too. Sounds like lamb/rice formulas may be best long-term (?). This is a large breed, too…
My favorite foods for dogs with “sensitive stomachs” is California Natural-very few ingredients, so not a lot in the food that can upset the system. A few other good ones include: Canidae Lamb & Rice, Wellness Simple Food Solutions, Natural Balance Limited Ingredient.
About the refusal of food: Some dogs simply prefer not to eat every day. If she refuses food for over a week, then I would be concerned, but to go 2-3 days without food is normal and OK.
About the pumpkin you state you’ll try: Pumpkin is used as a fiber source to help with constipation or diarrhea. If you choose to use it, use 100% pumpkin, NOT the pie filling. Don’t add animal fat to the dog’s diet-that could make the vomiting worse-and then cause diarrhea, too-it’s not something that will settle the stomach. Mild foods will do that (like the one you’re already feeding, or the ones suggested in the first paragraph).
I wonder why the vets wanted to prescribe Prednisone-what were the diagnoses when you took the dog in? You certainly don’t want a dog dependent on steroids, but a single round of steroids won’t hurt.
